2016 was a year of disruption and chaos. We experienced, in my opinion, the worst election in history. Even though this article is not about my political views, however, it is about the politics of censorship in the aftermath of the 2016 election cycle. It seems like there is a lot of banning of accounts, removal of comments, and limiting access to social information on all the major social platform. We won’t mention any of these platforms because I don’t want to get banned :P. Some may argue that these people deserve it. However, just because someone disagrees with another person does that means they should be removed from the social life forever? We have human right to say what we think. Right? A debate should be welcome, not silenced. However, that won’t matter soon. Blockchain tech has you covered.
There are organizations already working on decentralized social media. No central authority to ban, freeze, or erase your social media existence. One of those blockchain projects is called Libry Credits (LBC). Libry Credits is a decentralized version of YouTube. Anybody can sign up and start sharing videos and be as political as you like and you can get paid for sharing your videos. Another decentralized social network is Steem (STEEM). STEEM is a social content platform where people can write anything and get paid for it. These are just a few example of how blockchain technology can free the voices of countless peoples that we don’t necessarily agree with, but at least they’re heard.

Possible counterattack by the powers that be
Of course, some powerful entity will try to downplay these decentralized platforms because they will have no control over them (so we want to believe). These people behind the curtain live to control information. However, to play devil’s advocate lets imaging a possible counterstrike to regain control of the information. These entities could build a platform and will try to paint it as a free and just platform for all to use. This can be tricky. We need to look out for such a system masking as our ally. We already got that now with the current social networks and the horror stories you may have heard. I am not going into it because it will become political and this article is about being free from those oppressors. But, humans in general flock to whatever is shiny and new. So the current status quo will remain dominant, and these entities will continue to censor anybody that don’t conform to the “terms & conditions.” In other words, “we don’t like what you are saying, so you will be banned.”
Possible counterattack to the counterattack
The key for these blockchain based platforms to succeed is simply adoption. The user experience needs to be as easy or better than the currently centralized counterparts. The look and feel need to be seamless. The ability to make it available everywhere on any device is obvious. Adding an incentive of getting paid to share content or express your opinion will help greatly with this new wave of social media gathering to happen faster. The counterattack to the counterattack is adoption, adoption, and adoption.
Am I still being heard? Yikes!
